Fate/Extella: The Umbral Star - Tamamo definitely the highlight of the game

Fate/Extella: The Umbral Star is an action game developed by Marvelous and released in 2016. It is set in the Fate/Extra universe, adding more to the story and background. You can't really consider it a "direct sequel" to Fate/Extra because Kinoko Nasu stated it is "linked to an alternate version of Extra that isn't in any game yet".

The game is set after the events of the Holy Grail War of Fate/Extra, with Nero and Hakuno Kishinami winning the war and becoming the rulers of the Moon Cell. They possess the Regalia Ring, which grants them full authority over the Moon Cell. However, issues arise when someone else appears with another Regalia to oppose them.

The game made me like Tamamo even more than I liked her already. Her voice is exquisite

Saber Artoria is always saber Artoria, no matter the series. Eating is what she does best!

The story is divided into three different points of view (or "routes," if you think of this like a visual novel): one following Nero, one following Tamamo no Mae, and one following Altera. However, they all intertwine into one cohesive True Ending that clarifies the mystery and establishes the continuity that will be followed in future games of the series.

The game also sports side stories for each of the minor Servants that appear in the game, acting honestly as a sort of "fanservice". It doesn't add anything to the main plot, but since you likely know and enjoy those Servants (such as Saber Artoria or Elizabeth Bathory), you just want to see more of them in action.

Be aware that this is not a good title to start your Fate franchise experience because it assumes you already know some of the mechanics of the setting. You can still play it, but you would lose many of the nuances and details that are actually much easier to understand after watching any of the anime series available for the franchise.

Gameplay-wise, this is a Musou game similar to other titles Marvelous has made in the past, like Senran Kagura, with Noble Phantasms acting as super moves. In addition to that, the game has the usual "capture the flag" elements, with the player fighting on a map trying to wrestle control points away from enemy Servants and minions.

Admittedly Altera is a beauty, I don't like her personality much, but there's no denying that

Harem for our female Hakuno! What could you possibly want more?

To be honest, I am not a huge fan of Musou games as they feel repetitive after a while. Despite that, the story was good enough to keep me glued to the game. Just be aware that there is not a huge amount of variety in the battles, so after playing a few of them, all the others will play mostly the same.

Overall, Fate/Extella is a good game if you like the Musou genre or are a general fan of the Fate franchise. It has a good length (20-ish hours) and plenty of story content with new lore about the characters we all love.
