Last Exile Ginyoku no Fam - Now that's a way to start a series!Nov 12, 2025, 7:46:12 PM

Today I started watching Last Exile: Ginyoku no Fam (Fam, The Silver Wing in English), and I’ve already gone through the first three episodes. I’ve been meaning to start this series for a very long time, but I kept putting it off because I wanted to rewatch the original Last Exile first.

That rewatch wrapped up just a few days ago (article here), so now I finally felt ready to dive into this sequel. The story is set on Earth many generations after multiple Exile ships, likely from various worlds, were used to return to Earth. Humanity resettled there, displacing some of the planet’s original inhabitants.

That's surely a novel way to start a series

By the time Ginyoku no Fam begins, the existence of the Exiles has faded once again into legend. The world has become divided, with several factions waging war over its scarce resources. Among them, the Ades Federation stands out as a dominant power, targeting the Turan Kingdom, the descendants of those former colonists, even though countless generations have passed since the original conflict.

The central theme so far seems to revolve around war and scarcity, showing how there’s no absolute good or evil, only tragedy and loss on every side. The series makes an effort to humanize its characters: the same generals who commit ruthless acts in battle are later shown as caring, ordinary people in their private lives. It’s a refreshing touch that adds some moral complexity to the story.

Fam and her friend
Princesses x 2

The protagonist, Fam, is an energetic orphan who loves flying her Vanship alongside her navigator and best friend Giselle and the other pirates of her group. Her mother is shown to have died while flying her Vanship with Fam, who was still just a newborn at the time.

The two get caught up in the escalating conflict when they rescue Millia, the princess of Turan, during the attack on her capital. Millia’s sister appears to hold the key to one of the Exile ships, implying that their bloodline is connected to Alvis from the original series.

I prefer long hair to be honest, but still...
Poor girl

I’ve just reached the point where Millia decides to live among the sky pirates with Fam and Giselle, finding new purpose after losing everything. I’m really curious to see where the story will go from here, whether it will focus on resolving the larger war between nations or shift more toward Millia’s personal journey and her new life among the pirates.

Either way, I’m excited to keep watching and see how this sequel builds on the world I loved so much from the first Last Exile.
