Today I managed to watch episodes 7 to 9 of Last Exile: Ginyoku no Fam and wow, the story progression was quick and downright brutal. I was expecting the show to spend more time on life aboard the Silvius, but it looks like the writers had completely different plans.
The Ades Federation wastes no time and immediately attempts to capture Millia and sink the Silvius in the process. The crew survives two large-scale attacks thanks to Fam’s quick thinking and thanks to the intervention of the defense forces of a neighboring country. Since the battle crosses into their territory, they have no choice but to mobilize, which ends up saving the Silvius.
These episodes also give us more insight into Giselle. First we see her fear of losing her father during the initial ambush by the Ades Federation, and then the jealousy she feels when Fam chooses to take Millia instead of her during the mission to sabotage the main Ades warship. The flashbacks to their childhood add some welcome depth, helping to explain why the two are so close. I already really like Giselle as a character, so this extra development was a great addition for me.
We also get the surprise appearance of Vincent Alzey from the first series. It looks like the writers are setting up an alliance between his nation and Millia’s exiled government. This seems to be their narrative path toward an eventual large-scale war with the Ades Federation in order to stop their expansionist plans.
The show also continues humanizing the Ades generals. Several of them show discomfort with the ruthless orders they are being forced to carry out. It would not surprise me if some of them, along with the young empress, eventually defect when the situation becomes unbearable.
The real question now is what role the Exiles of the two nations will play once the conflict escalates. Will they remain symbolic relics used only for limited plot moments, or will they become central to the war? Personally, I am hoping for something subtle rather than a full Exile power escalation, but it could go either way.
Either way, I cannot wait to continue watching more episodes in the coming days. The series is definitely delivering some excellent content so far.
