Yancha Gyaru no Anjou-san Vol 03,04 - Yancha? Really Anna is just choroi...

Volumes 3 and 4 of Yancha Gyaru no Anjou-san continue with pretty much the same pace and developments for the main couple, Anna Anjou and Seto, but the story has also started to focus a bit more on the side characters around them, making me believe they might move into more prominent roles at some point.

I'll be honest here: the entire premise is that Anna Anjou is "yancha," which translates to mischievous, and sure, she is indeed mischievous, but the most prominent characteristic I would use to describe her wouldn't be that. "Choroi" (easy) fits a lot better, considering how easily she falls for Seto again and again at every opportunity.

Seto is clearly written as a self insert for the reader even though sometimes he feels way too wimpy.

As usual the covers are amazing, all of them. It really drives the 'gal' angle for Anna even though her behaviour sometimes drift.

In these volumes, Anna starts to worry about her relationship with Seto, whether it's the fact that Seto has a close relationship with the school nurse, or the fact that her actions can sometimes be seen as pushy toward him. She keeps accumulating stress without talking about it.

It reaches a point where even the oblivious Seto starts to notice and has to make a move, inviting her on a date to clarify that he's not bothered. I think this is the second time we see the more vulnerable side of Anna; the first time was when her dog died in the previous volumes. The final hug with Seto seems to imply that things are moving forward, but we're still early in the series, so there must be more hurdles ahead, I'm sure.

Toyoda and Inuyama seems to be the second couple even if it's more unrealistic than the first one to be honest.

Seems like it's goal in? Well, there's so many more volumes to go so it's clearly not done. What will be next?

As I mentioned before, the other characters are also getting some screen time, specifically Toyoda and Inuyama. Much like Anjou and Seto, they are complete opposites. Toyoda is the cool beauty with a mature-looking body who is always serious, while Inuyama is the typical, stereotypical perverted friend of the protagonist. The two, however, are starting to get closer thanks to their shared love for art.

The other character is Chita, another friend of Anjou's. She immediately noticed when Anjou was stressed and pressed Seto hard to do something about it. She seems to be extremely attached to Anjou, but they have given no hint as to why. Maybe something happened in the past? It would be interesting if they explore that.

Chita is yet an underutilized character, but this scene showed potential for her. Why did she react like this?

Seto was used in the usual 'he's lame until someone put some makeup'. It's usually reserved for girls, but it works so...

Now, the volume ends with the hug and their relationship stepping up a notch. They're still not lovers, but honestly, it feels like the only thing lacking is someone saying something to trigger it. But then again, this is a romance series, so it'll probably let things hang for a while longer. Not that I mind; I like the scenes and the teasing!
