Ghost in the Shell (2026) Ep.08 - Puppet Master must be still around...

Episode 8 of Ghost in the Shell (2026) seems to indicate that future episodes will continue focusing on the aftermath of the encounter with the Puppet Master. Motoko was brought back from the trance she entered in the last episode, and everything seems okay on the surface, but clearly things aren't settled yet.

Motoko seems to be spacing out a lot, making mistakes she wouldn't usually make during missions: clearly a sign of lingering influence from it. She also thinks it must still be out there somewhere. The question is, how can you catch it if it doesn't have a physical form and can jump freely between barriers in the network?

Motoko looked normal, but she was irritable and less prone to jokes like she was in the other episodes, a sign of things being different.

Puppet Master declared itself as a living entity, that would be a revolution even in this world. A completely artificial ghost...

The episode also showed how the AI was built by the government as an advanced hacking tool, but when it eventually gained consciousness, it rebelled at the idea of being reprogrammed, which would cause it to lose its sense of self. It's a typical theme in science fiction series, and honestly, with recent developments in AI, who knows if it'll become something real.

The core theme of Ghost in the Shell has always been about how, in this world, the boundary between machine and human has become so thin that it's hard to truly define. They present the "ghost" as the element that defines sentience, but then there are plenty of examples that go against that.

The biggest bombshell in the episode was that a journalist got hold of a tape showing Motoko killing someone during a mission. Even if the person was a criminal, this will put the spotlight on Section 9 and could end up escalating politically until the group is shut down or its actions are curtailed.

I remember in the original anime series how, in one particular situation, they were treated as criminals and hunted down by other sections of the government. It's probably not going to be that extreme here, but pressure is definitely going to be applied to close the section.

These mass production models have quite a nice design? Not complaining here, just wanted to know who thought about it...
