Kamiina Botan, Yoeru Sugata wa Yuri no Hana Ep.06 - Chin-lan is cute, but that thing...

Episode 6 of Kamiina Botan introduces a new character, Chang Chin-lan, a foreign student arriving to break the status quo within the dormitory, and I quite like her personality. She's aloof and seems completely unaffected by things happening around her, but it turns out it's just an act, as seen in the final scene of the episode.

I feel the series is trying too hard to be yuri for the sake of yuri. I'm not sure if it's just me, but the whole "we're destined together" bit between Botan and Ibuki is more irritating than fun, and it is starting to make me feel bored by the series, something I never thought I'd say about a yuri show.

Ibuki's only way to be moved? Jealousy apparently, it's super effective at making her do things against her will.

Chin-lan has that 'nipa' face, you know. The one from Rika of Higurashi, totally no brain cell is active.

The trauma Ibuki experienced turned out to be so minor it barely even registered. She had an unpleasant encounter with someone while drinking with others once, and now she has decided to stop drinking with people altogether? Oh, but Botan is different; clearly, the other girls aren't worth her time. *facepalm*

It may be because I'm a jaded, nearly 40-year-old man, but come on, Ibuki—is that the best you can do for drama? It reminded me of the stupid drama I saw in the Spoiled Rotten novel with the whole "they bullied me, so I moved to a different city" thing. Actually, maybe that's even better than this, to be honest.

This was one of the incriminating scenes with Ibuki going with the whole we're destined together rant. The art didn't help the scene to be honest. View video page

Adding to that, Chin-lan manages to make her drink just by sparking some interest in Botan to trigger her jealousy, which only makes Ibuki look more and more depressingly irritating. Just think about Kanade, who tried hard to get around her table and bond with Ibuki. This is the response? Seriously?

And as a final cherry on top, we have the inconsistent animation back on the table, with this episode being a mess once again. They call it an "artistic choice," but I call it poor quality, poor management, and poor results. They can spin it how they want, but it doesn't change the reality, you know.

Like what was the point of this scene between Yaeka and Akane? Like, why was it added to this episode?

Was it just to make them go 'we're here still' instead of forgetting of their existence? I'm confused Akane, I truly am.

I'm still going to watch the next few episodes, as I'm too invested to stop at this point, but I genuinely expected more after such a great first episode. This season has been really lackluster, to the point that I'm considering starting some older series to watch and perhaps talk about.
