Kaya-chan wa Kowakunai Ep.03 - Finally revealing the secret of Kaya's family?!
Episode 3 of Kaya-chan wa Kowakunai (カヤちゃんはコワくない) continues from where we left off, with Chie-sensei’s conflicting thoughts about whether to contact Osamu regarding Kaya. She decided to hold off on it for the time being and continue working, but she couldn't escape the situation for long.
The initial part of the episode was the usual "monster of the week" format, with a few different stories about specters attacking people at the kindergarten and Kaya-chan intervening to save the day as usual. The pool story was kind of a classic legend, but the mirror one was seriously disturbing, and I am not exactly sure how to take it.

Was the teacher actually replaced completely by a specter at the end despite Kaya-chan's intervention? Sure, she acted nicely toward the kids from that day on, but isn't that even scarier considering the implication of having a specter in a human body acting as the teacher?
After that, we went back to the Osamu storyline. Osamu's past was actually more serious than I expected. I was guessing it would be a "she saved him from some phenomenon" scenario, but I wasn't expecting it to be related to his family. It turns out Osamu's daughter died young in a traffic accident, but her spirit stayed with the family for a long time. Osamu (having the ability to see supernatural things) was able to communicate and stay with her despite his wife feeling uncomfortable about him talking to "nothing".
Unfortunately, ghosts should immediately pass on to the afterlife, or they start deteriorating and becoming specters over time, which is what happened to his daughter. Luckily, Kaya-chan was at the park when the transformation happened, and both Osamu and his wife were saved from it.
At the end, Osamu finally reveals what he learned after his investigation of Kaya's family in the last few months. It turns out our worries were correct and there is something in her house, something that even Kaya isn't able to fight against. I am not sure if this is because of the strength of this specter or the fact that it is attached to her mother.

In the next episode, Osamu will likely reveal more details to Chie-sensei and his plan to help Kaya. The story arc revolving around her mother will become the main focus while still having a few detours in between. I am really excited to see what they do with this, as it is definitely the main overarching storyline of the series.
