Kaya-chan wa Kowakunai Ep.05 - Who is Nana? What happened in the past to Kaya?

Episode 5 of Kaya-chan wa Kowakunai (カヤちゃんはコワくない) continues digging into Kaya's past by introducing her grandmother, Ebisumori Mutsu. Honestly, this made the story even scarier overall because we no longer know if Kaya can currently be trusted fully.

The grandmother was initially introduced as an extremely competent medium who easily calmed a crowd of elderly people who were in a frenzy due to a supernatural event. Her eyes are apparently able to see the future, and she has assisted the police in various cases in the past.

This was absolutely creepy. Kaya doesn't smirk like that, but that means who was controlling her body at that point?

The proud and smart Ebisumori Mutsu, she looks like a normal grandmother here, but during that scene...what does she know?

The red flags were present from the start, however, because she immediately said that she was unaware of Kaya's existence, as nobody had told her about her daughter giving birth. Additionally, Kaya seemingly changes significantly the moment she sees a family photo showing four people. These people were the grandmother, Kaya's mother, and two shadowed figures, who were perhaps siblings of Kaya's mother.

Once Mutsu saw Kaya, she opened her eyes completely, despite them being closed until that point, and started shouting at the girl. She said, "I see now. How terrible. Why? Nana... what happened to Nana?" while Kaya smirked at her as if she were possessed by something. That was definitely not Kaya, but since Osamu was unable to see anything in her, it must not be a wraith either. So, what was it?

They couldn't reason with her anymore, and Kaya lost consciousness right there, seemingly forgetting everything about their visit. Chie wonders, though, "What if that wasn't Kaya right there, but something else?". That theory fits because one would never see the real Kaya smirking in such a way.

Considering the fact that the grandmother, the mother, and Kaya are all involved in something paranormal, I think Osamu is on the right track by investigating their roots. There must be something within the family causing all these occurrences, but exactly what it is still eludes me.

Kaya's mother Mirai is really beautiful. Is Kaya going to grow to look like her I wonder.

I expect the next episode to go further along this line. While the grandmother route was a failure, surely there has to be someone else who can help them. In the opening animation, there is a young man easily swatting away wraiths, so perhaps he will be the next one to be introduced.
