Sketchbook: Full Color's - Sora's silence in the story was quite uniqueDecember 26, 2025 · 7:59 PM

Sketchbook ~full color's~ (スケッチブック) is a slice-of-life/comedy anime series based on a manga named just Sketchbook, written and illustrated by Totan Kobako. The anime series has 13 episodes and it aired in 2007 without attracting much attention, to be honest.

The story follows Sora Kajiwara, a shy girl with long hair who joins the art club in an unnamed Fukuoka high school. She is extremely quiet and rarely speaks, causing all the people around her to infer her feelings based on her, honestly very bright, expressions and actions.

She loves cats and is seen giving food to many of them, even though they don't seem to like it much considering the episode centered around them (yes, an episode entirely from their point of view). She is also a genuinely curious person who loves to try new things. Sometimes her imagination takes over and she ends up doing something weird, but that is really part of her charm.

The story itself doesn't have a particular purpose or end goal, and that is kind of normal with slice-of-life series. You just get a series of cute scenes exploring a day in her life as she interacts with people at school and in her private life. The purpose is pretty clear: it is to soothe the viewer, and I have to say that it is quite good at doing that. These kinds of shows are also often referred to as "iyashikei" (healing anime).

The characters (aside from Sora) are plenty, but let me just mention a few of them:

Natsumi Aso

A first-year twintail girl with a hobby of making hand puppets, which she uses to do pretty much everything. Sometimes she makes them converse with each other, sometimes she uses them to study, or even just wears them as gloves. She is close friends with Hazuki and Sora and is often seen together with them.

Hazuki Torikai

A first-year blonde-haired girl. She lives alone and is extremely frugal, turning any kind of transaction into something complicated to try and save money. Even her art choices are influenced by her personality, as she chooses approaches that are more "economical."

Hiyori Kasugano

The art club teacher and advisor. She is immature, unmotivated, and really doesn't care about what society thinks of her. She sometimes ends up cooking or even watching TV during art club activities. A recurring comedy sketch revolves around her and her pet chicken called Pi-chan.

Suzukaze Combo (Ryou Tanabe and Fuu Himuro)

A weird combo of second-year students who are always acting as if they were on a manzai comedy set. Considering their actions, they are clearly aware that they are part of a show and sometimes even break the fourth wall to address the audience directly.

While all the characters are generally likeable, Sora is definitely my favorite character of this anime series. It's really hard not to like her considering she is a walking pillar of cuteness in most of the scenes she's involved with. Plus she's voiced by Kana Hanazawa...

I am genuinely interested in reading the manga as I learned it has 14 volumes and it continued serializing for a long, long time—starting in 2002 and completing the run in 2019 (half within Monthly Comic Blade and half in Monthly Comic Garden). Hopefully, I can buy some volumes soon and give it a try.

Either way, I suggest giving this series a try. Sketchbook ~full color's~ is a solid slice-of-life series that will definitely make you nostalgic. It is the type of show that really soothes your soul, a style that was more common in the past. It is really rare to get one of these nowadays.
