Sousou no Frieren Season 2 Ep.04 - Monsters are getting stronger! Fern choosing clothes!

Episode 4 of Sousou no Frieren Season 2 (Frieren: Beyond Journey's End) continues right from where we left off last week, with Fern having her date with Stark. It was much less romantic than people online were expecting, but I was sure that would be the outcome for two main reasons (one meta and one non-meta).

The non-meta reason is that Fern was not really focused on Stark during the date, but was instead more interested in the concept of a "date" itself. She never had a normal childhood, nor did she have time to relate to people her own age. Being able to go on a date is something new and exciting, and I can see why she would be giddy (by Fern's standards, of course) about it.

I like how Fern is absolutely giddy about the date, but she still keep her standard resting face.

Fern shocked that she wasn't able to keep the boss under control with her barrier/attack spells.

The meta reason is that Fern cannot really have a romance while they are traveling for story reasons. I am sure she will eventually marry someone after the story ends in some sort of time-skip, but I don't think it will happen while they are on the road. It is not the focus of the series and would only distract from the rest of the story.

After the date, they continue moving north, and it seems like things are going to become harder to manage with just the three of them. They had a major fight against a monster in the area, and both Fern and Stark struggled to keep up with it and avoid being killed.

Frieren's spell can be quite flashy, but imagine being on Stark's side and having to trust Frieren not vaporize him. That must've been scary... View video page

The monster was eventually killed by Frieren with a high-power spell (see the attached video), but the encounter really shows how complicated the journey of the Hero Party must have been back then. According to Frieren, monsters like that one are quite commonplace in the north, and the original heroes managed to not only survive but push through and reach the Demon Lord.

I wonder if this means we are going to get a new companion in the near future (perhaps bringing back Sein, the priest from earlier?) or will they simply be more careful going forward? There are plenty of possible candidates to help them along the way, but actually joining the party is a different story.

Always like these pictures showing the party together. I do feel they need someone else though, maybe recruit back the priest?

Fern ways to pay back against Frieren are hilarious. Plus Frieren looks cute with braids!

The next episode is titled "Logistics in the Northern Plateau" and has quite an interesting set of preview sentences. The one that interested me the most was: "All we can do is buy back Ms. Frieren." What does that mean? Did Frieren get sold to someone?
