Star Rail 4.1 Story - Wait, Ashveil has an emanator-level shadow?! Evanescia.

Patch 4.1 of Honkai: Star Rail dropped today, and it delivers an incredible series of twists while further developing the Planarcadia story. We left the game with a shocking scene between Himeko and her father, but it turns out that was all a joke devised by her father. I had been theorizing various possibilities regarding Himeko's origins, and the developers really played us with that cliffhanger.

However, there were some genuine developments on Himeko's side as well. It turns out everyone in her bloodline is cursed to live no longer than thirty years, a curse that even the Aeon Aha was apparently unable to remove. For some reason, Himeko managed to solve this problem and remains alive and well. This adds even more mystery to her origins. We already knew she was the one who repaired the Astral Express and resumed its journey, but she surely must have had help with both the repairs and the curse.

The world of Planarcadia is not just a place for Aha to play tricks; other forces are also present and preparing something. We have Pearl, associated with the Aeon Qlipoth (Preservation), Yao Guang with the Aeon Lan (Hunt), and Evanescia, who is revealed to be affiliated with the Abundance. There is also Ashveil, who appears to have a shadow that devoured a Lord Ravager (Destruction), a Swarm (Propagation) element, and the Emanator of Abundance, Shuhu. Finally, we have Stelle following the Trailblazer Path.

As usual, Evanescia looks stunning. The pink girls dominate the Hoyoverse games after all.

Ashveil using his shadow to devour someone. Just what is this shadow? What path is it affiliated with?

Much like Amphoreus, this location is far more complicated than it appears on the surface. I am particularly interested in the shadow Ashveil carries, as it seems to be absurdly powerful. It is not every day that you encounter something capable of devouring two Emanators and the Swarm while staying alive.

Evanescia is also a fascinating character. Not only has she been created by the Abundance (perhaps as a new Emanator), but she also planted a Tree of Abundance right in the middle of Planarcadia. This must be related to Aha’s plans, as he would otherwise wipe her out with ease. Or perhaps "The Laughter" is just trying to spice things up for his own amusement?

Speaking of amusement, Aha themselves appear at the very end of the patch in the form of the gigantic moon surrounding Planarcadia. It turns out he was right in front of everyone for the entire story. He announces that the victor of these games will receive his full, permanent power and ascend to become the new Aeon of Elation. Of course, because it is Aha, we cannot be certain he is not just planning another joke. That is his entire Path, after all.

On another front, we have Fulwish, the only survivor from the academy seen in previous games and an underclassman of Himeko. She has seemingly become a powerful cult leader capable of completely brainwashing people. She appears to be behind several murders in the city and holds power over an ever-increasing number of citizens. It is unclear what she is planning, but she is certainly a supplicant participating in the game.

Fulwish was the quintessential cult leader, just look at the crazed expression she's making here. That segment was downright scary.

In the past Ashveil was forced to kill friends that were infected by the Abundance, but not much details has been given yet about what happened.

Finally, we have Nihilux, a mysterious newspaper owner and writer of the popular manga based on the Astral Express. She managed to sneak into the IPC building, use the authority of Pearl herself, and escape unscathed. She has seemed like a friendly character so far, but we have yet to see her true form. Her name especially reminds me of "Nihility," and that is never a good sign.

There were many other scenes in this five-hour story update, and I am still digesting everything myself, but I am now incredibly hyped to see what happens next. On the positive side, this patch is much shorter and features only one banner cycle, so we will not have to wait long for more story. The scheduled release is April 22, 2026, which will introduce Silver Wolf (SP) and Evanescia as playable characters.
