Kaya-chan wa Kowakunai Ep.10 - Mutsu saved Nana! Now what? Mirai...

Episode 10 of Kaya-chan wa Kowakunai (Kaya-chan isn't Scary) continues with a major series of revelations and twists. Right after the events of last week's episode, Kaya has been feeling down because, for the first time, she wasn't utterly invincible against spirits. Of course, the target that time wasn't actually a spirit (it was a creepy human), but she is just a child and does not realize the difference. This episode focuses on her recovering her original strength.

Major revelations are revealed throughout the story. We now have a full picture of the internal structure of the Ebisumori family, and it seems I was somewhat right in my earlier speculations. The Ebisumori family was originally led by a miko blessed by a god. To preserve this power through the generations, the family developed a system to create a new miko in each generation through "curse gestation."

They looked like normal kids back then, what happened that soured the relationship between Nana and Mirai so much?

Kaya-chan, after a small temporary setback, is now back in business and making all the spirits tremble. Love her in these scenes!

While we do not know all the details, this has been going on for hundreds of years. In this generation, it was Nana's job to produce the next miko because she had the best psychic aptitude of the two daughters. The issue is that Mirai stole the item needed for the ritual and performed it herself instead.

Nana claimed Mirai did it out of spite for being ostracized for her lack of psychic powers, but I am not sure that is the whole story. She was shown to be very loving toward her sister during their childhood. Furthermore, Nana provided a cryptic piece of information by saying, "otherwise she would...", which leads me to suspect that the process might actually kill the mother during gestation.

I was worried before, but after watching this battle scene, I'm glad that Kaya is back to her usual self. She's the protector of everyone in this story, now just need to last push to cleanse her mother. View video page

Namu's information is also somewhat unreliable because he comes from a branch family and does not have the full picture. He was sent away when he was only five years old. Nana seemed worried about him, and Kaya even referred to him as "Male Aunt Nana", which makes me wonder if he is in a similar position to Nana regarding his specific powers.

The final part of the episode was truly shocking. Nana finally discovers information about the monster brewing within Mirai and tries to confront her, but she is nearly killed by a massive curse surrounding her sister. She is only saved because Mutsu used a protective talisman and died in her place. The question remains: what is Mirai trying to achieve with these rituals? Is it simply revenge against the family?

Thankfully Nana survived, she seems to be a genuinely good person. Mirai on the other hand...what happened?

That's ideal, but not an easy result especially with what happened in this episode.

Now it is time for the grand finale. With only two episodes remaining, I am excited to see how they resolve this situation in such a short time. I will definitely start reading the manga once the anime is over. I want to know more about the story since the manga is still ongoing, meaning there must be more to the narrative after the situation with the mother is resolved.
