Today I watched episodes 17 to 19 of Psycho-Pass Season 1. It was sort of a slowdown in terms of action, but the focus shifted to explaining the truth behind the Sibyl System and it validated most of the hypotheses I made in the previous posts about the series.
Yes, the Sibyl System is powered by the brains of the "special" individuals who are immune to it, and Makishima Shougo was intended to become a part of the system. I kind of expected this once they showed Chief Kasei (or well, whoever was controlling that body at the time) being so interested in preserving his life.
What I did not predict was that most of the brains actually retained their own individuality and are not really trapped or anything. They can even control cyborg bodies and move around. In fact, the Kasei approaching Makishima in this episode is actually another criminal who was integrated long ago and knew Makishima.
Kougami left the station (after being nearly killed by Kasei) and is now pursuing Makishima to kill him. I understand his point, but I wonder how he will react once he knows the truth behind the whole system. Technically, Makishima's actions could be viewed as a net positive to society as a whole if they expose this lie.
The Sibyl System is just a broken system. While it manages to preserve a level of control and stability in society, I really cannot see the benefit of it. Crimes still happen, criminals still appear, and their solution is usually to just murder them with the Dominator, which is... well, you know.
Ginoza also seems on the verge of breaking due to the stress of knowing the truth and acting as a middleman for the system. His Psycho-Pass numbers are getting higher and he is on the way to "getting promoted" to be an Enforcer if things stay as they are. I cannot blame him to be honest. He is stuck between a rock and a hard place.
I am also wondering about the higher-ups in society, like the politicians and rich businessmen. Are they really staying put and accepting this system controlled by the brains of hundreds of criminals to determine their lives? So far they have been completely absent from the story, but that could be a side to explore in a future season.
Now Akane is being approached by the Sibyl System directly. I am excited to know how the first season will end and I will be making another post to finish my coverage of it soon. Of course, I will watch the following seasons too in the future as the series is just too good to not do that.
