Psycho Pass - The ending was great. Now onward to second season!December 10, 2025 ยท 5:00 AM

Today I watched episodes 20 to 22 of Psycho-Pass Season 1, which completes the season with a bang full of action and interesting scenes. Most of the major revelations were covered already, so it was a matter of settling the remaining plot points to conclude the story. Boy, was it an amazing show.

We start just where we left off, with Kougami tailing Makishima to stop his attempt to destroy society by contaminating the food supply with a virus. Meanwhile, Akane is getting recruited by the Sibyl System in order to capture Makishima alive and embed him inside the system itself (in exchange for Kougami's safety).

Ultra cool Akane!Ultra cool Akane!

Akane shows huge growth in these last few episodes, taking the initiative after learning the truth behind the Sibyl System. She even threatens the system, getting the ability to force the Dominator to work in a particular mode regardless of the target, and uses whatever means she can to reach her target. She gets this close to actually achieving it.

Unfortunately, Makishima manages to knock her unconscious near the end of the chase. This leaves Kougami free reign to achieve what he was trying to do from the beginning: killing Makishima. This completely destroys his chance to return to society, as his Psycho-Pass is now in a range that is no longer allowed.

Yeah, I would've made a similar face in that situation. Yeah, I would've made a similar face in that situation.
This was also cool, blackmailing the Sybil system. This was also cool, blackmailing the Sybil system.

Kougami disappears completely from everyone after achieving his goal, though I guess we will see more of him in the coming seasons. While Akane is technically following the Sibyl System's orders, she still thinks it is just the "current best system" to control society and believes it may change in the future.

Tragedies struck elsewhere too. Tomomi Masaoka dies protecting his son, Nobuchika Ginoza, who inevitably falls into latent criminal territory after the events. He becomes an Enforcer working under Akane. This, together with the introduction of a new Inspector near the end of the last episode, marks a new beginning for the Bureau.

Man, the inspector suit is actually quite good... Man, the inspector suit is actually quite good...

Overall, I have to say that this anime was way beyond my expectations and managed to keep me glued to the story. The characters were all charming (even the antagonists), and Akane was an amazing protagonist covering all the angles that I like to see in a character. She was cute at times, cool at others, and generally the voice of reason within a world that is way too adapted to the "normality" brought by Sibyl.

I hated Makishima and his actions, which means they did a good job at writing him as an antagonist. I really cannot blame Kougami for ending him after his malevolent crimes over this season. He was truly someone beyond any chance of recovery. Making him become a part of the Sibyl System would have just felt... unfair toward the victims.

I am going to continue with the second season next in the coming weeks as I really want to know what happens now to Kougami and Akane. Will they manage to find a way to decommission the system?
