Champignon no Majo Ep.09 - First battle for Lizel. That was sly of him...

Episode 9 of Champignon no Majo continues from where we left off, with Lizel now finally able to use more powerful magic thanks to the support of the spirits that usually help white witches in their incantations. While this seems like a boon at first, it appears to be the very thing that creates the rift between white and black witches.

During the episode (see the attached video), Lizel fights a creature affected by poison using the magic provided by the spirits. The moment he stops himself from killing it and instead decides to create a cape with the same properties as the one Luna created (to reduce its pain), the spirits turn on him and refuse to help him any further.

Apparently Luna is deeply into tea, the whole tea that makes you cry was interesting.

Luna, stop reacting in these ways, you'll create misunderstandings!

This raises a significant question: is this part of the reason why white witches began hunting black witches? Do they do it to obtain more rewards from the spirits who demand such actions? Is there a hierarchy among spirits? That would be a ghastly situation, though it remains speculation for now as nothing has been confirmed.

Through the episode, Luna proves once again to be an extremely compassionate girl, trying to help every creature she meets on the road. Even if she cannot fix a problem at its source, such as the poison corruption, she at least tries to reduce the pain the creatures feel by using her magic to absorb part of it.

I'm not totally sure how does this thing with the seeds work, any wish based on what? His power? The spirit power? Or a combination of the two? View video page

Lizel, on the other hand, is growing into quite a sly boy. The scene where he fakes ignorance to try and get a kiss from Luna was quite manipulative. One might say he is just a kid, but he really isn't, is he? He clearly remembers how to kiss someone's hand. I think I agree with Claude on this one; it is not a good sign for his character growth.

I still cannot see Lizel as a romantic interest. Luna is more of a parental figure to him at this stage, and I cannot see that changing unless the story tries very hard to twist things to push them together. My hope is that his crush evolves into general affection and they simply continue living as a family.

That was a smart move, but still think it was manipulative. Poor Luna!

Next week's episode will mark a change as Lizel prepares to learn more magic on his own without relying on the spirits around him. How that will go remains unknown, but I feel it is about time for someone from the black witches to arrive and check on his progress.
