Kuroneko to Majo no Kyoushitsu Ep.02 - 12 different types of magic? That's interesting...

Episode 2 of Kuroneko to Majo no Kyoushitsu impressed me with another solid installment that established the basic rules of the world while advancing Spica's growth as a magician and her personal journey to enter the academy and become like her idol, Sirius.

The first important element confirmed was that there are twelve types of magic, all linked to a zodiac sign. This is a significant departure from the usual magic systems seen in this genre, which often focus on four or sometimes six (with light/dark added) elements.

Now, I don't want to say, but Spica has talent. It's not easy to put yourself in this position and doing it with magic feels even better!

The amount of fanservice of Spica is great in these two episodes, usually focused on her legs. I love her character design and you know...

Spica is a Virgo and focuses on manipulating plants; she can make them grow and move at will, which is extremely useful in battle, as shown in this episode through her use of them for both defense and offense. Her best friend, Aria, is an Aquarius, which is, as expected, linked to water magic, such as using it like a projectile.

The hilarious part is that their surnames are apparently literally their signs, a pattern that seems to apply to all other characters in the series, even those not yet introduced. Usually, stories don't go to this extent to characterize them, but I think it works.

Now, Sirius says that she has lack of control of her magic, but what if she actually likes it and ends up in these pose on purpose?! View video page

Spica learns how to use her magic the hard way, as seen in the various hilarious positions she ends up in, eventually leading to her first fight against a golem sneakily used by the academy director to test the new students. Spica and Aria were the only two from this batch to pass, as the others did nothing.

The pacing of the episode was brisk, and I never felt bored. First, there was the lesson about magic, then harvesting using magic for training, followed by the journey and the fight against the golem, which led to Spica's enrollment. Other series should take notes from this one on how to create an organic and fun episode.

It's clear that the series is male targeted, especially from these shots showing Spica in various positions. She's lovely

I quite like Aria too, she has that smug attitude and it's clearly she's deeply in love with Spica. I wonder if there's an astrological meaning to it...

Both Spica and Sirius are great main characters; Spica's cheerfulness and energy drive the narrative and keep the viewer entertained, while Sirius acts as a "world-builder," delivering information needed to expand the plot and clarify the mechanics. Plus, the whole "kiss" mechanic to awaken Sirius's powers is hilarious.

The next episode is titled "The Magicians of the Zodiac," and I assume it is time to learn about the other characters in the story. I have had a look at the cast in the characters tab, and it seems like there is a good ratio of male and female characters. I am honestly excited to see what happens next and am already preparing to start the manga.
