Yuusha-kei ni Shosu Ep.12 - Ending! Second season soon! Kivia?!
Episode 12 of Sentenced to Be a Hero: The Prison Records of Penal Hero Unit 9004 concludes the first season with the unexpected defeat of Spriggan and the revelation of the mechanics behind the Penal Hero system. There were so many surprises condensed into twenty minutes that I was honestly hyped for the entire duration.
Spriggan dies without a major battle following a brief spar against Xylo. It turns out he was actually a Demon Lord of deception and lacked any real power beyond possessing bodies. The final blow, however, was delivered by Rhyno in a subsequent scene where he reveals that he is a Demon Lord himself.
Apparently, he is a Demon Lord who enjoys killing his own kind. This makes him an anomaly within the demon ranks, which is why he was welcomed by the humans. This explains that his strange aura and personality, which I mentioned a few weeks ago, were not just quirks but the result of him being non-human.

Regarding Kivia, it is confirmed that her uncle was indeed the one who caused the invasion in the first place. She delivers judgment but is thrown in jail as a result of her actions. Much like Xylo, she is deemed a criminal and prepared for sentencing, but the habitually suspicious man with a goddess by his side appears and offers her the chance to become a Penal Hero instead.
This time, however, he explains how the system works. Apparently, the original goddess initially pulled people from other worlds, but those individuals likely had morals and were difficult to control. Consequently, they began summoning deceased people from this world instead. This was the origin of the system: using the dead as pawns to fight against the endless hordes of Demon Lords.
There is a limit to how many heroes the goddess can manage, and Kivia fills the final available slot. Kivia becomes a Penal Hero at the very end by dying and being "summoned" once more. It is unclear what will happen to her memories, but if the writers follow the path I expect, I assume she will specifically forget Xylo and the others. This would provide her with a "fresh start" in their relationship.
One could even argue that this entire first season was the story of how Kivia became a Penal Hero, as she received the most development among the main cast, far more than anyone else. I liked her a lot, and I simply hope they do not change her character too much in the second season due to the memory loss.

Additionally, the nation's second capital has fallen to the Demon Lord hordes, who used the initial attack as a diversion to destroy that base. There is now very little protecting the main capital from invasion, and the situation is even more dire than anyone could have expected.
I am excited to see more, and I cannot wait for the second season to begin. However, given the timing of the announcement, I do not expect it to air until the fall 2026 or winter 2027 season. I am tempted to pick up the light novels instead, but I am not entirely sure yet.
